Spring and fall in Wisconsin means walleyes in the boat livewell. In the Onalaska area, walleyes are also a year round fish that can be caught in deep or shallow water, on the bottom, suspended or even on topwater ... and don't forget ... through the ice!
You don't have to travel to Canada to bag a bunch of mouth watering Walleye or catch that wall mounter of 10 pounds. Tactics to bag the glassy eyed predator are varied to weather and river conditions.
Early spring is best for vertical jigging hair jigs, drop shot live bait, and blade lures. Some of the best colors are white, silver, purple, blue and combos thereof. As the nights warm, then chartreuse, orange and yellow increase catches too.
As the seasons move on, drifting and trolling hard body lures like jointed Shad Raps in backwater sloughs is a great method for taking 'eyes. Live bait rigs vary from using minnows, willow cats, nightcrawlers and leeches.
Attacking wing dams along the main channel casting with crankbaits can bring up good walleyes and saugers as well. Flipping 4" ring worms in snags along undercut banks and branches will produce during many conditions.
When the hot weather and low water conditions hit, then our guides pull out secret techniques that you probably have never seen before ... but they work! No, explosives are not involved.
And, if conditions are right, it may be the first time you have caught walleyes on topwater pop-r's! Later in the evening, just after dusk, tossing into the rocky shallows ... and ... BAM! It's not a bass, it's a walleye. How wild is that?
